Horse-drawn carriage rides, custom cookies, Landmark Center, yellow camero convertible, candy bar, “My hero” garter, Michael’s diamond ring, cutest flower girls ever, and custom slippers were just a few of the amazing details from Michael and Jacki’s wedding today. The bridal party was a volatile mix of fun-loving Minneapolis’ finest police officers and attorneys. Sometimes when couples walk down the aisle at the ceremony, I will say something ridiculous to make them smile but ALL the groomsmen did this to each bridesmaid. It was uncanny and hilarious.

Jacki’s dress was gorgeous and Michael and his shades yielded some pretty sweet images below. The image of the dress hanging before the ceremony was thanks to Josh’s spiderman skills – it’s one of my favorite dress images ever. We got to ascend to the clock tower for one of my favorite images of the year with the pillar and the sun below. The place felt like an eerie set for Lord of the Rings: small hobbit door included.

We captured this wedding with five cameras, so the video will take awhile to edit down, and we’ll post here when it’s ready. Tanks Michael and Jacki for your wonderful hospitality and for letting us be a part of your special day! -Judd, Josh, James, Jaimie, and Alicia

Ryan + Allie: 08.04.2012 (The Woods Chapel and The Metropolitan)

There were so many cool things and details about this wedding but this is the coolest: Allie’s present to Ryan was her framed diary entry from 2001 when they were childhood sweethearts:

“Dear Diary, Well everything is pretty much the same. Ryan and me are still going out. It’s been 6 months. Half a Year! Ahh.. I love him so much. I don’t know what I would do without him. I feel like I want to marry him or something! I always think about my future and he’s always in it. I imagine us getting married and having kids. I’m so glad I found him! He feels the same way, and he said he always imagines us getting married too. Cool huh?!”

Well, 11 years after that entry it happened. It was so special for us because Allie is our studio album designer and has worked for the studio for about 5 years; so everyone felt like family. Ha I just remembered she was one of the first high school seniors I shot, so that is a first — senior pics & wedding pics! We stayed late, ran a photobooth and I even broke out The Worm dance move which slightly injured my back late in the night! Here’s a little Worm tutorial video for y’all. It was a day filled with infectious smiles, laughter, crazy dancing, hijinks, shenanigans, and just plain fun. One really cool idea they did was instead of a unity candle, the had a box in which their parents placed a letter. The box is to be opened at their 10 year anniversary, or opened earlier if they were having problems with their marriage. It is a very forward-thinking and unique idea!

Some of our favorite images are below: Ryan faking like he’s running away from the ceremony, Allie’s flying veil (yes she stuck her head out the car window on the way to the ceremony), waterfall superheros, singing during the first dance, etc, etc, etc! We will edit a complete highlight video for them in a few weeks – below is the slideshow we played at the reception plus a few extras and a couple video clips. Congrats Ryan and Allie it was such a pleasure! -Judd, Josh, Natalie, and Jaimie

Mark + Alli: 07.21.2012 (The Woods Chapel and Lafayette Club)

Mark and Alli chose two amazing venues for their wedding: The Woods Chapel and Lafayette Club. The crazy heat actually created an awesomely spectacular sunset: it was like all the moisture in the air amplified the orange from the sunset and yielded one of the most amazing sunset images we have taken (see below).

The Woods Chapel is this rustic eye-candy of a place. The getting ready images of Alli are some of my favorite ever given the quaint second floor area. The guys we playing poker downstairs for pieces of gum and then the game was on: first glance, fountains, sweat droplets, slight nervousness, Bennett the crazy-haired ring bearer, Dave’s heart-felt speech, and just smiles everywhere I turned. We were honored to work with this family for a second time as we captured J.C. and Lindsay’s wedding in 2008 – it is so rewarding to see families grow!

Some of our favorite images from the same day slideshow are below (plus a few more). Some random hilarity was J.C. again scaling a trellis (it was a tree the first time), Lindsay’s parrot hunting story, Eddie’s senior picture pose, and Kevin’s marriage advice. It was so great to work with you Mark and Alli and we’ll see you soon! -Judd, Josh, Chris, and Alicia

Jason + Anne: 07.14.2012 (Northwestern College and Hotel 340)

Random thoughts from Jason and Anne’s Wedding:
Heat (first time both Josh and I brought a “reception shirt”), jello shots, bouquet toss nailing the chandelier, unity candle light part #2 at reception (it was a dud at the wedding but Anne handled it with amazing laid-backness – see video below), awesome Josh/Jason jump at the landmark center, programs with popsicle sticks attached for fans, Boone’s Farm on the limo (that was a first), Jason’s dance moves (video below), Dan’s father of the bride dance and “hug out the naughties” speech.

Perhaps my favorite part of the night happened while I was making the same-day slideshow in the adjacent room. Megan was giving her matron of honor speech and she mentioned that she found out that Annie was reading her journal so she planted some info: (I paraphrase) – “I wonder when mom and dad are going to tell Annie that she is adopted and that’s why she doesn’t fit in.” That brought the house down – well played Megan, well played!

Jason and Anne, thank you so much for letting us be part of your fun world for a day and making us feel right at home. One of my favorite images is that of you guys kissing outside the door of Nazareth Chapel with your Grandma looking through the door – precious smile! Your family and friends were so fun and just rolled with the heat; we look forward to hanging with you in the future! -Judd and Josh

Why Do You Do What You Do?

Because I am a dude, I am often surprisingly void of emotion. But there are a few things that get to me: heartfelt toasts at weddings, a final glance between father and daughter before he walks her down the aisle, watching a high school girl’s self confidence skyrocket when she sees her images, and family sessions like the Lyon family’s last week.

We all have “jobs” and we get caught up in our own personal rat races and empty sales goals; it is rare that we stop and examine WHY we do what we do. Have you ever have a moment in your job where you feel that you are doing something that is bigger than yourself – something that transcends who you are and really makes a huge difference for people? I am lucky to have some of those moments as a photographer, and that is what motivates our team here at the studio to continue to share our gift with others.

With our dear friends the Lyons, it was just awesome that I could capture these images of a family that is dealing with a serious illness. How cool is it to brighten someone’s day/life with images? 90 minutes of almost directionless image capturing followed by a 90 minute boat cruise on the St. Croix followed by some very inspired light sabre images was a prefect day. Thanks Dave and Amy for the opportunity to serve, and reminding my of my “why.” -Judd

Below are some of my favorite images and a Ted Talk by Tony Robbins on “Why.”
