The Loft at Studio J is almost a reality – please help!

The all new Loft at Studio J will soon be the newest and red-hot event center in Stillwater!  The latest plans include room to seat 200-250 and a capacity of about 450 using both levels.  It will be an amazing, handicapped-accessible second floor space is historic downtown Stillwater complete with a horseshoe shaped bar, Loft-style bathrooms, and a grand staircase with main street entry.

The price tag has risen to the point where we need to apply for a small business loan and that’s where you come in!  Our original goal was to raise $25,000, but now we need to raise $15,000 ASAP to close the loan and start construction in mid-June. Construction will last only 5-6 weeks with a projected opening date of August 1, 2013.  We will have a SWEET Grand Opening party! :):)  So please help us donate even if only $10 – all donors will be entered in a contest to win a free iPad!

Any donation over $100 will receive 50% back as a gift certificate to Studio J Photography and the highest donor (current leader is $1000) will receive a $2000 set of wall canvases and family portrait session.  There are other goodies as well like being able to scribe your name on a piece of the Loft for posterity – check out the Go Fund Me Page for details. 🙂

If you want to book an event at The Loft with a deposit before August 1, 2013, you will enjoy 25% off room rental and ALL services including photography and photo booths!

Thanks for helping! – The Studio J Family (Judd, Josh, Jen, Jaimie, and Emily)

Booking rates start at $350 for weekday and $600 for weekends.

Brian + Ashley: 05.18.2013 (Machine Shed: Lake Elmo, MN)

Brian and Ashley were married in Mexico a couple months ago and this was there stateside reception! Ashely worked as an amazing retoucher for us during our busy season last fall so it was fun to work with her as a bride. 🙂 The Machine Shed had some really cool “farm-like” backdrops we used for the variation on American Gothic image.  We also made a few of our own images out in the tick-infested brush – I love the walking one – it is very unique to what we do. Ashley lost her bustle but hey, it was worth the shot right? The cool shadow image was in the pool area… kids in their swimsuits were like “What in the heck is going on?”

The details they chose we very unique like the signing bench, umbrella name tags, cupcakes, bridal dress pockets, and wire balls.  Josh got a sweet ring shot on top of one of the centerpieces! It was weird freezing ourselves for like the last 8 months here in MN and then hearing myself tell the bridesmaids if they were hot to stand in the shade — I hadn’t said that since August 2012! What fun Brian and Ashley, thanks for having us a part of your reception celebration! -Judd and Josh

Zach Sobiech’s Story

Zach passed away this morning: May 20, 2013 – thanks for touching so many lives, Zach!

Below is his legacy:

Post from April 3, 2013
I had the pleasure of meeting Zach last Wednesday as he was filming his new video “Starhopping” on a rooftop here in downtown Stillwater with Jeff Dunn and Erik Mickelsen. He took the time to autograph some of our magic studio cups and talked to my family. What a humble and talented guy! Zach has had a long fight with bone cancer and is using his last weeks to extend his influence and footprint on this world through his music – have a listen and see if you don’t see life a little differently afterward!

Here is Zach’s Caring Bridge Site to learn more about his story.

Zac + Liz: 05.13.2013 (St. John the Baptist Church and Dellwood Hills Country Club)

Zac and Liz had such a fun wedding – “No cheesy photos!”  You got it. I feel like we haven’t taken one in years but that is very subjective. 🙂

The ceremony was at the gorgeous and spacious St. John The Baptist Church in New Brighton and their reception was at the always fun Dellwood Hills Country Club. Zac and Liz had this sweet party bus that “sat” 30 people – crazy!  The driver was a little leary going over the decorative bridge at Manitou Island but Zac convinced him by saying that “semis drove over it!” Classic. 🙂  At Manitou Island we stopped at a beautiful home (Thanks Mark and Rebecca Young Shavlik!) and got some unique images on the stairwell and “floating bed.” Molly you were such a trooper getting up those stairs with your bum foot but the champagne helped right?

At Dellwood we had cake pops, and crazy awesome table wood decorations by Molly and one of our 2007 brides and rabbit handler, Cari!  The toasts are by far the favorite part of weddings for me and twin sister Julia just rocked a heartfelt and tearful toast.  The first dances between Liz and Zac, Liz and Bill, and Mary and Zac were unduplicated in weddings that I have seen… there was such a connection between Liz and Zac and their respective parents, it was super palpable in the room.  I love it when love between two people is so evident and obvious to everyone in the room!

Stan + Meagan: 05.04.2013 (The Loft at Studio J and The Green Room, Stillwater, MN)

What a beautiful wedding between two very fun people; Stan and Meagan. Meagan is a good friend who has modeled for us in the past and Stan owns The Green Room right across the street from our studio. The weather was a bit chilly so we had to move indoors to The Loft for the short ceremony before the party started!

Some of my favorite memories were the lantern launch at the end of the night (it was a little chilly for them), their first glance to Twisted Sister that was playing on the 80’s Pandora station, all the great live music and later DJ dancing, doing some “light painting”, Judge Ed Cass’s stories and anecdotes, and Meagan looking at me when Kurt Jorgenson was singing True Companion (the lyrics say “all dressed in white” but her dress was “Oatmeal”).

It was a fun night in downtown Stillwater here for a super fun couple and group of friends – congrats Stan and Meagan! -Judd and Josh

Eric + Jana: 04.13.2013 (Druid Hills Golf Club – Atlanta, GA)

What an awesome privilege to spend time with Eric and Jana the last few days in some spring Georgia sunshine!  Jana was a bridesmaid in Mike and Amanda’s wedding in 2010 and asked us back then if we would shoot her wedding. So we hopped on a plane to Atlanta Thursday, and were greeted with amazing hospitality from a really fun group of Eric and Jana’s family and friends!  Random memories: from live band Karaoke to the best lobster bisque I have ever tasted to a groom’s cake as big as a football field to Amanda’s musical toast to the honey badger video to a really cool signing frame that ETCHED the signatures to some friendly Bulldog / Gamecock rivalry songs, it was like the hits just kept on coming all weekend!  It was very interesting being removed from the “inside jokes” and just laughing along and documenting it.  Actually that’s happening more and more as I get older! Darn it. 🙂

We captured some really fun and fresh images at this wedding that we are super excited to share – the one at the Fox Theater was for Eric’s mom, Phyllis, who had recently passed away – it was one of her favorite places and I’m glad we took the time to stop there.  While we were waiting for the bus to drive around the block, we got the cool shadow image on the sidewalk and the gawkers were a-plenty in the restaurant right there.  The final video I took of them leaving with the rose petals flying was with my iPhone5 – we had packed up already. 🙂 Thanks Eric and Jana for an awesome weekend!! -Judd and Josh

What a beautiful video! I just relived the rehearsal dinner and wedding all over again. I loved seeing the pictures taken before and after the wedding. The colors are so clear and vivid. I will watch this video many more times over and over. Thanks for taking the picture of Payne, my grandson. I highly recommend your work. Thanks for making such beautiful memories of two special people that I love so much.

Eric + Sherri: 04.06.2013

This small, private, family wedding between Eric and Sherri had just an awesome laid-back vibe. It was a great celebration of the blending of the modern day “Brady Bunch” as Eric and Sherri soon welcome child #6 into the fray and great to see good friend Pastor Heath deliver great messages! You guys are in for a fun journey! -Judd 🙂
