Jason + Anne: 07.14.2012 (Northwestern College and Hotel 340)

Random thoughts from Jason and Anne’s Wedding:
Heat (first time both Josh and I brought a “reception shirt”), jello shots, bouquet toss nailing the chandelier, unity candle light part #2 at reception (it was a dud at the wedding but Anne handled it with amazing laid-backness – see video below), awesome Josh/Jason jump at the landmark center, programs with popsicle sticks attached for fans, Boone’s Farm on the limo (that was a first), Jason’s dance moves (video below), Dan’s father of the bride dance and “hug out the naughties” speech.

Perhaps my favorite part of the night happened while I was making the same-day slideshow in the adjacent room. Megan was giving her matron of honor speech and she mentioned that she found out that Annie was reading her journal so she planted some info: (I paraphrase) – “I wonder when mom and dad are going to tell Annie that she is adopted and that’s why she doesn’t fit in.” That brought the house down – well played Megan, well played!

Jason and Anne, thank you so much for letting us be part of your fun world for a day and making us feel right at home. One of my favorite images is that of you guys kissing outside the door of Nazareth Chapel with your Grandma looking through the door – precious smile! Your family and friends were so fun and just rolled with the heat; we look forward to hanging with you in the future! -Judd and Josh

I have watched the slideshow many times and looked at the photographs countless times. I can’t tell you how amazing they are! Your talent and personality put everyone at ease, which enabled you to capture Anne and Jason’s happiness to perfection.
What a gift these photographs are for all of us to reflect on a beautifully special day. Thank you for maintaining your sense of fun throughout the “warmth” of the day!!

Why Do You Do What You Do?

Because I am a dude, I am often surprisingly void of emotion. But there are a few things that get to me: heartfelt toasts at weddings, a final glance between father and daughter before he walks her down the aisle, watching a high school girl’s self confidence skyrocket when she sees her images, and family sessions like the Lyon family’s last week.

We all have “jobs” and we get caught up in our own personal rat races and empty sales goals; it is rare that we stop and examine WHY we do what we do. Have you ever have a moment in your job where you feel that you are doing something that is bigger than yourself – something that transcends who you are and really makes a huge difference for people? I am lucky to have some of those moments as a photographer, and that is what motivates our team here at the studio to continue to share our gift with others.

With our dear friends the Lyons, it was just awesome that I could capture these images of a family that is dealing with a serious illness. How cool is it to brighten someone’s day/life with images? 90 minutes of almost directionless image capturing followed by a 90 minute boat cruise on the St. Croix followed by some very inspired light sabre images was a prefect day. Thanks Dave and Amy for the opportunity to serve, and reminding my of my “why.” -Judd

Below are some of my favorite images and a Ted Talk by Tony Robbins on “Why.”

INSTRUMENTAL GUITAR VIDEO: “Fatima’s Waltz”

BIO:
Justin Roth is a nationally touring singer/songwriter/acoustic guitarist who combines an artful blend of hooks laid on a bed of brilliantly inventive guitar technique for a unique mix of acoustic indie folk. Justin has toured with Red House recording artist John Gorka and has opened for some of the finest singer/songwriters on the acoustic music scene, including Shawn Colvin, Martin Sexton, Lucy Kaplansky, Darrell Scott, and David Wilcox. Equally, his guitar playing has earned him shared stages with some of the greatest fingerstyle players of today, such as Tommy Emmanuel, Andy McKee, Billy McLaughlin, California Guitar Trio and Pat Donohue. He has sold over 11,000 copies of his five independent CDs as well as being a core contributor to an instrumental solo guitar album produced for Target Stores, entitled Lifescapes – Solo Guitar, which has sold over 70,000 copies nationwide. Justin’s fan-funded new album, Now You Know, which he engineered, produced, played and sang every note himself in his bedroom studio, was released in May 2011. It has since been voted as one of the Top 100 Folk Albums of 2011 by Roots Music Report.

Chris + Anne: 06.08.2012 (Post-Wedding Fashion Session)

Anne and Chris were married Friday at a beautifully quaint Minneapolis courthouse and wanted to do a “day after” session with us.  Anne hadn’t even worn her dress for the ceremony but she broke it out for our lifestyle / fashion session!  Oh, and the vintage sunglasses you brought, Anne that I carefully / secretly stashed in my pocket were just. plain. awesome. 🙂 – Judd and Josh

Patrick + Kelsey: 06.02.2012 (St. Rose of Lima & Windows at the IDS Center, Minneapolis)

Wow! Talk about a ton of “firsts” for Studio J. Kelsey and Patrick’s wedding was full of fun surprises like working with heavy construction equipment, a bomb pop/Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles ice-cream stop, and a reception at the top of the IDS center. Chris (our second cameraman) was in awe of how the cars and people looked like ants running around and I think it took about an hour for our ears to pop when we got back down to ground level. Natalie (our intern and lighting specialist) was able to grab some great candid images between holding lights and helping us out. We hope that Kelsey and Patrick had half as much fun as we did; you can’t beat a perfect weather wedding day! Thanks for having such a wonderful wedding day and sharing it with us. We hope our photo-booth images make you smile! – Josh, Chris, and Natalie

Tim + Jennifer: 05.19.2012 (Christ Lutheran Church – Marine on St. Croix, Lowell Inn – Stillwater)

We had another gorgeous day for Tim and Jennifer’s wedding at the church where Grumpy Old Men was filmed. After taking the trolley to the scenic overlook near Stillwater, we saw this cute older couple reading their papers in the cool green convertible. Jenny thought it would make a fun image to have them in one of the shots so take a peek below. 🙂 What a fun day with a crazy fun bridal party, lots of kids, willing motorcyclists, and beautiful families. Tim and Jenny also had a crazy Fujifilm camera they used for instant photobooth pics – the black wig looked good on me… I think. Thanks for such a fun day you guys! -Judd, Josh, and Lisa
