Chase + Ellie: 12.05.15 (The Loft at Studio J)

Green grass in December for Chase and Ellie – what a fun day! It’s always challenging shooting in December with cold and darkness, but today we added a twinkle parade, fireworks, and Santa in the bucket of a fire truck to the list! I love the images we took just before the reception out by the twinkle lights down by The Dock Cafe. At Pioneer Park, the engineer guys wanted an image of the two Stillwater bridges in focus with them out-of-focus just to clarify! And then like true gentlemen, they held the flowers for the bridesmaids and mugged for a few images.

Ellie had some new creative image ideas and tons of great details like the ring box and cork-filled centerpieces – so cool. We shot Chase and Ellie’s engagement session of 18 months ago so they really had the details dialed in. I love how The Loft seems so cozy in the winter… snowflakes and people bundled up outside on Main Street while the party is going on inside.

The image of Ellie looking out the bride’s room window just before the ceremony is one of my favorites for the year! I love it as photographers when we have a few extra minutes and grab a quick and unplanned awesome image (in between bites of cheese curds of course – ha!). Thanks Ellie and Chase for choosing The Loft and us to capture your wedding images! – Judd and Josh and The Loft crew

Anthony + Tanya: 10.24.2015 (The Loft at Studio J)

Today was a throwback to my teaching days with Tony and Tanya and all the North High connections!

We have continued to have a magical fall for photography in Stillwater! October 24 seems a little late for fall colors, but the yellows really came out this week to add to an already colorful palette in the valley. The images we took at Pioneer Park were very unique and colorful for the season – my favorite is the sun flare one with Tony and Tanya in the bottom corner.

When we shoot at the awesome Loft at Studio J, we try to always do different and unique images for people and Tanya’s hanging dress with the wide lens on Josh’s wall is one of our favorites. Some other fun images below include Grandma on the flip phone, the groomsmen adjusting their suspenders in a train, tears during the first dance sung by Tanya’s parents, and a big group hug. We also got some sweet images on the soon-to-be-demolished loading dock at our new venue, JX.

There are always a few moments during any wedding that are very emotional and surprising that we love to capture. Perhaps my favorite is the speeches because you never really know how funny and emotional they will be – especially when friends and family pour their heart out to the bride and groom – and that happened today.

We have done same-day slideshows of images we have taken during the wedding day and played them at the reception for about 10 years now, but something happened today that was different: Tanya was so overcome by the power of seeing those images in almost real time, that she came and gave me a hug DURING the slideshow. She totally missed about 5 images just to give me a hug and that was awesome!!! It was such a surprise that neither Josh or I could capture it. 🙂

Thank you Tony and Tanya for letting us be a part of your big day and deliver these images to you! -Judd and Josh and The Loft Staff

Greg + Kaidra: 10.10.2015 (Stillwater Library and The Loft at Studio J)

Greg and Kaidra rolled the weather dice by having a rooftop ceremony on October 10 and came up huge! It was a glorious day and we even got some video of the pumpkin drop at Stillwater Harvest Fest.

Some of my favorite images are the blinky ring/ring shot, grandma and mom holding hands during the ceremony, Greg’s Wu Tang symbols, and taking some pretty epic images in the streets right where Kaidra serves at Whitey’s! It was so fun to drive that massive bus around from Pioneer Park, to Whitey’s for a round of jello shots, and the right back to the Loft. Navigating Stillwater during Harvest Fest was pretty tricky but it was really fun having such a buzz in downtown Stillwater (literally) and having all of the celebration close by.

It was such a gorgeous day filled with tons of fun and a special shout out to Lisa’s Catering who set a record by getting 240 guests through the buffet line in 17 minutes! Thanks Greg and Kaidra for letting us be part of your big day and we will literally see you around! – Judd, Josh, and the Loft crew!

Jeremiah + Ashley: 09.26.2015 (Mill City Museum)

Dog with a dress… enough said!

Haley Bop, the rescue dog, almost overheated but wow did we get some UNIQUE images with her! If you could order a day for a wedding, this would be it: 60 and sunny with very little wind – it was just gorgeous and allowed a lot of movement and backlit images. Extra shout out to Flicker who cruised around with the walker – bravo!

Ashley is a huge Disney fan, so you’ll see the fun stickers she put on her wedding wedges (assist to Kelly on the second cork popping to make the shot symmetrical). I also loved the images with the cool crane and backlit sun in Gold Medal Park. Down by The Guthrie, we found this crazy random reflective wall – the image of the girls there laughing is awesome. We all ended up with soaked shoes from the torrential rains that happened a few days before.

Mill City Museum is such a cool place for a wedding; the setting is so unique and we got to take some images high on the 9th floor. I got just a little scared when I hung the camera over the edge… We had to take a couple secret elevators and corridors to get there but it was sooo worth it! The ring bearer and flower girl images were to die for – they were so animated!

Jeremiah and Ashley, it was so fun to be a part of your wedding day and that steak was AMAZING! – Judd and Josh

JX Venue Logo / Brand Contest!

OK so after spending months at the drawing board, we have two great candidates for logos for one of the newest (and largest) event venues in the Twin Cities: JX Event Venue. It will be opening May 1, 2016.

We think there is some creativity out there that we would love to see! Contest submissions should be submitted to judd@studiojphoto.com by October 1, 2015 and the winner will be announced by October 15, 2015 and be awarded the $500 prize. We have to like and use the wining logo. It’s that simple!

Style words: Elegant, Sophisticated, Sexy, Modern, Timeless, Mature
Colors: Grey, Silver, Blue, Black, White, Navy, Violet?
Direction: We have tried in many forms to have the J and X interlace in a cool way that is not necessarily seen at first.
Name: “JX Event Venue” or “JX Venue at The Shoe Factory” (The building was built in 1906 as a shoe factory and will have a secret speakeasy with a secret tunnel where they carried the shoes underground to the store).

The space has historic brick sides and dramatic, modern light fixtures, the bar is lined with multimedia, and it is located in the heart of beautiful and historic downtown Stillwater, MN.

Brason + Lindsey: 08.15.15 (Avalon Riverboat and The Loft at Studio J)

Sometimes being a good photographer in Stillwater (or anywhere) means you know when the bridal party needs to just stop taking pictures and chow down on mac ‘n cheese pizza from Quickfire Pizza… Their ceremony was on The Avalon Riverboat without food, and when we started the creative time it was pretty clear that almost everyone needed food. So we spent 45 minutes just feeding our faces and having drinks in downtown Stillwater on a balmy day, and man did it hit the spot!

From the moment we met Brason and Lindsey, we had the feeling that there was going to be a whirlwind of fun, craziness, and spontaneity surrounding their wedding. We showed up for an engagement session, got to meet “Pile” the dog, and five hours later we had taken about 600 engagement pictures (mostly due Jason’s erratic driving while Lindsey and Brason were tubing!). Epic.

Lindsey had an AMAZING statement piece designed by Marlaina Stone, and she had them made for each of her bridesmaids’ personality. The massive clasp is what we put the rings around for the ring image. We also grabbed a very cool image of Lindsey laying on the ground that I love – it was inspired by the crazy carpet pattern on the Avalon. It was funny that a couple of her relatives though she had fallen or passed out when we were taking the shots – sorry about that! 🙂

Some other fun random memories: Brason had a puppy pattern tie, the bridesmaid threw their wilted bouquets over the edge of the boat, Chris polished of many people’s beers at the pizza place, the bridal party was flown into the groom’s dinner on Jimmy Buffet’s former plane, the 45 second ceremony (after processional), the bottle of Dom Pérignon on the bride’s room, Lindsey spilling pizza on her dress, rooftop after after party, but MOST of all was the HEIGHT of the bridal toss images at Pioneer Park! So the award for this wedding goes to the highest bridal toss ever, by any wedding party anywhere I’m sure.

It was such a pleasure working with you guys, Lindsey and Brason – thanks for letting us be a part of your lives to capture these images! – Judd and Josh
